Luncarty hit top spot after derby day win

Bleachers grab bragging rights at Brownlands Park

-

Luncarty moved to the top of the Premier League North on Saturday following a Perthshire derby day victory against Blairgowrie.

The Bleachers’ 3-0 win at Brownlands Park continued a strong start to the season and saw them jump above Dundee North End on goal difference.

Weekend strikes from Kieran Donald, Fraser Mills and Ollie Saffery sealed the three points for Jon Kelly’s side.

“I was very pleased getting three points on Saturday against Blairgowrie,” Kelly said. “They always make it tough for us and Saturday was no different.

“We had six players missing at the weekend for different reasons so it was very pleasing to see some of the younger players in our squad step up and deliver a good performance.

“I thought we controlled the game first half but were not quite clicking in the final third, although we did make the breakthrough just before half-time.

“Second half we were much more efficient and, in all honesty, could have scored more. But with a clean sheet and three goals at home, I can’t complain.

“We move into pole position but we all know it’s early days. All we want to do at the moment is keep our performance levels up and take one game at a time.”

Kinnoull also bagged three points on Saturday but Alan Cameron admits opponents Forfar Albion deserved something out of the game.

Fraser Wilson opened the scoring for the Perth side at Guthrie Park but the hosts battled back into the contest before the break.

It took a second half header from Mark Smith to secure the win and keep Forfar without a victory this term.

“If I’m being honest we played our get-out-of-jail card on Saturday as we were very poor by the standards the guys have set,” said Kinnoull boss Cameron.

“We knew we had to keep plugging away and thankfully for us we got the three points that mattered. That said, Forfar Albion deserved a draw and played extremely well.

“We will be back working hard at training this week as the lads know that anything less than a massive improvement will mean disappointment in the derby against Scone Thistle.”

Scone, meanwhile, lost 3-1 to Lochee Harp on Saturday.

Sean Whitworth had levelled the game early in the second half but the Dundee men would add goals in the 50th and 81st minute.

Coupar Angus showed signs of promise at the weekend but were on the receiving end of a 7-4 defeat against Brechin Vics.

Steve Florence, Lee Maloney (2) and Brandon Calderwood netted the goals for the Foxhall Park side.
