A stitch in time in Stanley

-

Stanley Community Tapestry Project has unveiled its piece, representing the village’s links with the rest of the world A Perthshire community has been crafting away to create a unique tapestry panel.

Members of the Stanley Community Tapestry Project this week unveiled their Stanley tapestry panel.

They have been working on the tapestry since April.

The work was inspired by the Scottish Diaspora Tapestry, which locals and visitors alike marvelled at when it was on display at Stanley Mills from April to June this year. The stitched design represents the world’s links with Stanley, and in turn Stanley’s links with the world.

Fiona Davidson, Historic Environment Scotland’s education officer based at Stanley Mills said:“The diaspora panel depicts links to the world.

“The swifts migrating and returning each year and the woven cotton belting produced in the mill are images synonymous with Stanley. The village of Stanley was founded to house the first workers at the mills who came from Highland Perthshire in the 18th century.

“The last century saw people coming from other European countries to take up employment at the mills.

“At the same time, some members of the community emigrated to seek new lives elsewhere.

“To create the design; stories, memories and information were shared with artist Frances Law by members of the Stanley community.

“Working with local embroiderer Val Aldridge, the panel was stitched between April and August using some of the last yarn produced at the mills.

“Stanley Primary pupils, former workers and other individuals also contributed to the finished piece.”

Members of the local community worked to bring the tapestry together.
