Signs mark countdown to start of Solheim Cup

- Rachel Clark

New road signs marking next year’s Solheim Cup in Gleneagles have started to appear across the region.

This week, Perth and Kinross Council started to install road signs welcoming visitors to the major golfing tournament next September, with the first being unveiled this week on the A9 northbound at Balhaldie.

Over the next few months, a total of 28 road signs will be put up on A roads across the Perth and Kinross boundaries.

The Solheim Cup, just like the Ryder Cup which was held in the luxury Perthshire resort in 2014, will see the best 12 female golfers from America and Europe play against each other in competition – with over 100,000 visitors expected to descend on the iconic course.

Councillor Murray Lyle, leader of Perth and Kinross Council and representative for the Strathallan area, said:“By putting up these signs, we are building on the excitement as we take another step towards welcoming this prestigious sporting event It is one year to go until the Solheim Cup at Gleneagles to the area, and letting residents and visitors alike know that the Solheim Cup is coming to Gleneagles next year.”

Across the world, more than 600 million homes are expected to tune into the televised coverage, and the council are hoping this will promote the area as an open and accessible golf and tourism destination on a global platform.

Councillors is also hoping that it will bring “significant economic benefits”, just five years after the Ryder Cup was held at Gleneagles and the junior Ryder Cup at Blairgowrie.

Paul Bush, director of events at VisitScotland, said:“Perth and Kinross is renowned as a world-class gold and tourism

destination with a strong track record of supporting major events and 2019 will be no different, with the Solheim Cup being the must-attend sporting event of the year across Scotland.

“I’m delighted to see the host council engaging with the event, and look forward to the excitement building across Perth and Kinross in the next 12 months, to deliver an atmosphere at Gleneagles that is second to none.”

The Solheim Cup will be held at Gleneagles from September 9 until 15 next year.
