True Gents have single aim of sounding fresh

-

Babies can hear their first notes of opera music at a childorientated performance in Perth Theatre.

An award-winning company of musicians from Scottish Opera will be at Perth Theatre’s Joan Knight Studio to present BambinO - opera for babies six to 18 months old.

Four shows are planned today, September 14 and tomorrow, September 15 at 10am and 11.30am both days.

During the show babies and performers explore a beautifully crafted world full of golden eggs, soft blue cushions and soaring notes as a baby bird takes flight for the very first time.

As well as showing at the Fringe, the mini music experience has been in Aberdeen, Inverness, Motherwell and even to Lerwick.

The endearing and imaginative work recently had sell-out tours in Paris and at The Metropolitan Opera in New York.

Children at this youngest of ages have minds wide open to new sounds and experiences and BambinO lets babies crawl free, explore and interact with the singers and each other.

And the have adopted a new approach of releasing tunes one by one instead of as a whole album working with Twin City Records to release the upcoming singles.

True Gents have adopted the description of “a special vein of psychinfused jangle-pop, almost with a vibe akin to Arab Strap,” to reflect how the band sounds today.

It’s been a steady climb for Euan, Toby and the variously changing members of their band. True Gents have played venues, pubs and festivals around Scotland, and have shared the bill with groups such as the Treacherous Orchestra, Red Hot Chilli Pipers at Perth Concert Hall, Colonel Mustard and the Dijon 5, The John Langan Band, Shooglenifty and The Levellers.

True Gents made a CD at T’Pot in 2006, an EP in 2009, then put out their debut album ‘In the Dark we set Sail’ (2013) and just 10 months ago, another called ‘Blood Moon’.

The sound up until now has been more folk-rock influenced, but the new single ‘Feels like Heaven’, is an altogether more upbeat sensation.

Released today - September 14 this latest song speaks of breaking down stigma over mental health issues and overcoming opiates. It was written by Euan and recorded by Dave MacFarlane at Clearwater Studios in Perth and has an official video directed by Her Name is Murder Productions.

Also playing in TG’s latest line up is Rosemary Stanford - keys/vocals, Rea Pirnie – vocals, Stu Bennett - lead guitars, Owen Toole – bass and Kieron Toole on drums/percussion.

BambinO is coming to Perth’s Joan Knight Studio

Fans won’t have to wait long for more: follow-up singles are planned for release later this year.

Toby, who swaps around singersongwriter and guitarist duties with Euan, told the PA: “We reckon it’s important to keep our focus on writing songs.

“It keeps things positive if new material keeps coming out. Otherwise things can drift. With both of us writing it means the styles can differ quite a bit between songs.”

Toby said that things have been good for True Gents in 2018: “We had a brilliant time at the Fringe with other Perth bands at Stramash and more recently we were on at Craigie Hillfest.

“That was awesome, we were walking up the hill and we heard ‘Feels Like Heaven’ blasting out on the sound system.

“Everyone was in great spirits and we were the first band on to open up proceedings, so we got to play it live on stage.”

The single is available on all major music sharing platforms.
