Teenager makes good progress

- Court reporter

A Perth teenager, chased by police after he was seen dropping a knife into the River Tay, has made a good start to a scheme designed to steer youngsters away from a life of crime.

The 17-year-old, who can’t be named for legal reasons, has already completed several hours of unpaid work after being put on the Right Track project at the court.

He admitted that on July 6 last year, at the King James VI golf course on Moncreiffe Island, he had the blade in his possession.

Not guilty pleas were accepted to further charges of stealing wire cutters, loppers, a hammer and two knives and having an offensive weapon a hammer - in his possession.

The court was told that he was seen “disposing” of the knife near the railway bridge at about 6.40pm.

Solicitor David Holmes said there had been other people involved but because of their age they hadn’t been brought to the sheriff court.

Sheriff William Wood deferred sentence until December 12 and called for a further Right Track progress report.
