Kyle McGeoghie, a second year apprentice at Perth College UHI, has made it to the national finals of the UK SkillPLUMB competition, taking place in November.
This comes after Kyle, who is currently studying a level three SVQ in plumbing at the college, came second in the Scottish heats of the competition, held at West College Scotland in June.
As part of the competition, which was between all of the plumbing colleges in Scotland, Kyle had to complete a copper pipe work forming and installation exercise lasting a whopping four hours.
Only the top eight competitors from all of the UK heats were able to make it into the final, and Kyle qualified in third place.
Gordon Nisbet, plumbing and gas lecturer at Perth College UHI, said:“Kyle was an excellent ambassador for Perth College UHI and his employer, William Combe and Son plumbing and heating in Auchterarder, during the competition.
“He did really well and produced copper pipe work to a very good and consistent standard.
“The criteria tolerances for the copper pipe work was plus or minus two millimetres, any dimension outside that tolerance was not marked.”
Kyle will now look forward to the national final in November. This is the third time in six years a Perth student has qualified for the final, with successful students going on to the world skills competition next year in Kazan, Russia.
