Racerunning a big hit on North Inch
Perth Strathtay Harriers were delighted with the turnout at their first Racerunning Road Run around the scenic North Inch course at the weekend.
The event took place on Saturday, September 15 where people enjoyed the thrill of‘RaceRunning’, an innovative sport for disabled people with impaired balance.
A RaceRunner is a custom-built tricycle without pedals.
Athletes and support staff from all over Scotland took part in the 2.4 kilometre run.
Perth Strathtay Harriers have a very successful group of athletes from six-years-old to adult training every week at the George Duncan Athletics Arena.
A spokesperson on behalf of the Perth Strathtay Harriers said:“Gavin Drysdale, European Champion, started the race and we had our own world record holder, Matthew Doig taking part in not just one lap but two.
“Some of the other athletes who train at the George Duncan Athletics Arena included Niamh Sandeman, Wiktoria Mucha, Graeme Baxter, Calum MacGregor and Elaine Boyd.”
Racerunning is now recognised as a para-athletics sport and will now feature in major para athletics competition.
“On the day we had many volunteers from the club who gave up their valuable time to help,”the spokesperson continued.
“A special mention also to Perth and Kinross Disability Sport, our local disability sport umbrella organisation whose staff and some trustees were there to cheer on the runners.
“We have been very lucky to work with some wonderful local groups to get our band of athletes the right equipment to participate, for example the Rotary Club of Kinnoull have been keen supporters of inclusive approach to our sport.
“The club would like to thank The Guildry Incorporation of Perth for supporting the event and all our other partners including Perth and Kinross council and the Gannochy Trust who make what we do possible.”
