Doig and Luncarty target league glory

Brownlands Park side fired up for North End clash

Richard Doig believes Luncarty must be setting their sights on winning the Premier League North title.

The Bleachers have made a strong start to the campaign and currently sit top of the table after the opening seven league games.

This weekend may well present the biggest challenge so far with a trip to face Dundee North End, who sit on the same points total.

And striker Doig said: “Confidence is high after a very good start to the season – unbeaten in our first nine games is a great start for us.

“I think the fact the majority of the group have been together for a couple of years now does help that, along with some quality signings in the summer makes it a good place to be just now.

“After coming so close to winning the league last year, it has to be the aim.

“The club have never managed to do it so it would be a great achievement for everyone.

“That is especially when you consider that this is just our third season together, but there’s a lot of games to play and we know it won’t be easy.

“North End were favourites for the league, they won it last year and they will be just as tough this year.

“They are a good footballing side which means we will have to be at our best on Saturday.”

Luncarty head into the game after defeating Stoneyburn Juniors to book their place in the third round of the Scottish Cup.

“It’s always good to go far in the cups, especially the Scottish,” Doig said.

“Everyone always has an extra buzz about them for Scottish Cup days.

“Stoneyburn was all about getting through to the next round, it wasn’t our best display and conditions didn’t help but we are in the hat and that’s what matters.

“As for the next round it’s always good to play the big sides away but a home draw and get into the next round would suit me.”

Doig netted in the 4-2 win but added: “I don’t like setting too many targets, but I’ve had a good start to the season in front of goal and hopefully that continues. But as long as the team keeps on winning and we are challenging for trophies come the end of the season, then I’m happy.”

Scone Thistle, meanwhile, will look to bounce back from a 1-0 Scottish Cup loss against Neilston when they get back to league duty on Saturday.

The Jags travel to play East Craigie, who sit two places above them in the Premier League North standings.

Following last week’s cup exit, assistant manager Paul Farquharson said: “I thought the boys battled hard to compete with a very good Neilston team.

“I felt Scone had the better chances but, unfortunately, you get punished if you don’t take them.”

Kinnoull will be on a high heading into their home league test with Lochee Harp this weekend after getting the better of Saltcoats Victoria in the Scottish Cup.

Manager Alan Cameron said: “As always we are expecting a very difficult Richard Doig is hoping to play his part in Luncarty’s Premier League North challenge game against Lochee Harp. Last season they turned us over.

“But we will hopefully have one or two back from last week’s injury list.

“Ryan Robb has been added to the long list of injured players with concussion.”

Elsewhere in the Premier League North, both east Perthshire sides are on home soil.
