Councillors updated onschool behaviour

- Rachel Clark

Councillors are to be updated on moves to promote positive behaviour in the region’s schools.

At the next meeting of Perth and Kinross Council’s lifelong learning committee on Wednesday, October 31, elected members will be given an update on ‘restorative approaches’ by education bosses.

Currently ‘restorative approaches’ are being introduced to schools across Perth and Kinross as part of a new strategy to promote positive behaviour.

This approach has been singled out as an example of good practice by Education Scotland and the University of Edinburgh, with some schools even being visited by the two as a result.

Cllr Caroline Shiers, convener of lifelong learning at the council, said: “Restorative approaches provides a positive way forward for schools to promote positive relationships and successful resolution of conflict.

“We have many examples across our schools where restorative approaches have been successful, leading to an environment where young people feel listened to and involved in resolving issues of direct concern to them.”

A spokesperson for the local authority added: “The approaches are reported to have led to improvements in relationships both among children and young people and between them and staff.

“They have also led to young people gaining the skills and confidence to resolve issues independently.”

The lifelong learning committee will meet on Wednesday, October 31 in the council chambers.
