Matty feels at home as a striker

-

St Johnstone’s Matty Kennedy is enjoying being given the chance to shine in the forward department.

The Perth summer signing was deployed as a striker against St Mirren and netted the second goal to round off a comfortable McDiarmid Park win. He also made a difference the previous week after coming off the bench to inspire Saints to victory at Motherwell while playing up top.

It’s a position Kennedy, traditionally a winger, is thriving in and he said:“I think I’ve been doing well in training.

“I missed the whole of pre-season plus the first two cup games.

“But I’m starting to get back to my fitness now and I’m feeling a lot sharper in training.

“The gaffer has given me a chance up front to go and show my stuff and I feel like I’ve taken the chance.

“I’ve played up front a few times but have not solidly played there. If I end up consistently playing there I’ll learn and get better.

“I’d like to play striker or number 10 so that I’m higher up the pitch because I’m good at taking players on.

“Getting to do that up the pitch, it’s only the last line of defence rather than being wide. I’d like to keep playing up there.”

Saints now head for Livingston on Wednesday night with plans to build on a positive run of form.

“Livingston have been flying but as a team we have no pressure because we’ve won the last two games,”Kennedy said.

“They’ll be the favourites, we’ll be the underdogs. So we can only go there and do our best, which I’m sure we will do.”
