Armistice parades

-

To honour local fallen servicemen and women, veterans, the serving military, civilian victims of World War I and more recent conflicts – as well as those who remained at home to support various war efforts – a range of commemorative events will be taking place across Perth and Kinross.

In Perth at 8am Provost Dennis Melloy and Her Majesty’s LordLieutenant of Perth and Kinross, Brigadier Sir Melville Jameson will lay wreaths at the 51st memorial at the North Inch.

This will be followed at 10.10am by a civic parade, escorted by the High Constables of Perth, which will lead through the streets of Perth from the council buildings at 2 High Street to St John’s Kirk.

The remembrance service will take place in St John’s Kirk at 10.30am, following which Reverend Murdoch will invite members of the congregation to join him and participate in the Walk of Gratitude.

Members of the public not attending the service who wish to join the Walk of Gratitude are asked to assemble on St John Street at 11.20-11.30 am.

Walks of Gratitude were introduced by The Royal British Legion Scotland to provide an opportunity for members of the public to actively participate in remembrance events and follow directly behind a military parade in a Walk of Gratitude. You can pick up a memorial card on the day to carry during the walk.

Led by Perth and District Pipe Band, the walk will follow the military parade, including military vehicles, on a route from St John Street - South Street - Tay Street - High Street – George Street - to Perth Concert Hall.

From noon to 2pm Provost Melloy will host a public civic reception in the foyer of Perth Concert Hall.

The reception includes refreshments and entertainment from Perthshire Brass, The McAndrews Sisters, and a specially composed piece of music as part of the Armistice iPlay4Peace event.

Outside the concert hall there will also be a replica Spitfire and military vehicle display from noon to 3pm. Pupils at Perth Academy will continue to work on their‘Flowers of the Forest’ project in which all the names on the school war memorial will be commemorated with a short ceremony on the centenary of when they fell.
