Turin Brakes put on stylish show

There was another treat for Carse music lovers as the Turin Brakes treated a large crowd to a masterclass of indie perfection at the Inchyra Arts Club.

The evening began with a solo performance by some time Clean Bandit singer Eliza Shaddad, accompanying herself on slightly grungy guitar, which contrasted splendidly with her clear, soaring vocals.

She showcased songs from ‘Future’, her recently released and critically acclaimed self-penned album, which included ‘This is My Cue’, lauded as potential song of the year. Her lyrics are heartfelt and poignant and that voice was electrifying.

Turin Brakes opened with three tracks from their recent ‘Invisible Storm’ release, which marks a slight return to a back to basics indie format for the London-based four piece.

Sounding for all the world like a happy Radiohead or at least a less miserable Travis, they took their audience on a whistle stop tour of their extensive back catalogue.

Playing live they are tougher than their recorded output would suggest and the incisive guitar playing of Gale Paridjanian was particularly demonstrated as his acoustic slide playing decorated some of the gentler tracks. Olly Knight’s vocals are strongly supported by the impressive harmonies of the rest of the band, including the admirably hirsute Eddie Myer, their jazz influenced bass player and Rob Allum, their powerhouse drummer.

The wit of the song writing and the pleasure they derive from playing together is obvious and their between song banter was delightful.

Dedicating ‘Future Boy or Girl’ to an expectant mother who was recently married in the venue, (that they described as the classiest cow shed they’d ever been in), was a lovely moment, as was their description of trying to call ‘Up in the Clouds’, used on an episode of Love Island, ‘Beefcake in a Balloon’.

Turin Brakes turned in a splendidly assured performance which the near capacity crowd appreciated enormously as they returned for an exceptional foursong encore.

Indie, folk, funk and rock all blended together wonderfully.

‘My Love’ even had hints of George Harrison’s ‘All Things Must Pass’ before heading out into full on rock territory. This was splendid stuff indeed.

Next at the Inchyra Arts Club will be a solo show by The View’s front man, Kyle Falconer on Wednesday, November 21.
