Whinnybank Cat Sanctuary Organisers apologise for the lack of news over the past two weeks. Linda who composes it had to travel down south to look after her sister. It is important to highlight that anyone feeding stray cats should get the cat checked for a microchip – either at a vets or rescue centre. Most organisation will have a scanner and may be willing to visit to scan the cat. Recently, Sue took in a stray cat from some people who had been feeding it for some time. They had decided to move and could not take the cat with them. The first thing Sue did was scan the cat and found he had a microchip. He had been missing for over two years and as a result has now been happily reunited with his family in Tayport. Sue thanks everyone who has donated cat food recently. Anyone who can offer a home to a cat, help at fundraising events, in the shops or at the sanctuary, can call Sue on 01337 840414. Arthritis Awareness in Atholl Vicky Turnbull of RSPB was the speaker at the November meeting of Arthritis Awareness in Atholl. She is the warden for the Tayside reserves of Loch Leven, Tay Reed Beds and Loch Kinnordy near Kirriemuir. She gave advice on how best to feed garden birds, especially at this time of year. She then spoke about the 10 most common birds, their habits and identities, using figures from this year’s Big Birdwatch for Tayside. She also discussed the three reserves, highlighting their differences. Loch Kinnordy has plenty of bird life, but has management problems to keep vegetation from encroaching on to the loch. The Reed Beds have to be carefully managed to ensure the various stages of reed growth, particularly for bearded tits on the reserve, while Loch Leven’s main function is for education and recreation. It was a very informative talk and enjoyed by everyone. Chairman Hugh Mackintosh gave the vote of thanks. Members look forward to the December meeting which will be Christmas lunch at the theatre. Edradour and Pitlochry Bonfire The newly formed bonfire committee provided a great bonfire and fireworks display at the recreation ground, Pitlochry. Approximately 1000 spectators turned up to watch a spectacular display of fireworks. The committee would like to thank all who assisted and made the display such a success. In particular, Andrew Symonton, owner of Edradour Distillery, the Rotary, Scouts and Brownies, Heartland radio and lighting engineer, K Reid. Football Vale of Atholl league match score was Vale 5 Scone 0. Team were Collis, Carr, Coleman, Tritton, Gillies, Robinson, Smillie, Kennedy, Berry, McLauchlan, Morrison, McLauchlan, Stewart, Hall, Clark and Taylor. Vale took another step away from the bottom of the league with a well deserved victory at home. They had a few chances to score before Glenn Robinson got past his marker and made his way into the box. His shot came off the keeper into the net to make it 1-0. A long clearance from keeper James Collis sent Iain Morrison clear to net a second. Robinson had to go off injured and was replaced by Owen McLauchlan. Despite other chances, the score remained at the break. The visitors started the second half better but could not make headway against Vale’s defence. Vale managed to get their game together and Sean McLauchlan lashed home a corner from 25 yards and scored a third. Ten minutes later his brother, Owen latched on to a through ball from Steven Coleman to run in and slide past the keeper for a fourth. Iain Morrison and Sean McLauchlan were replaced by Mike Clark and Harvey Stewart. Collis in Vale’s goal was not redundant and handled anything that slipped past the defence. Mike Clark had a goal disallowed when his shot from Stewart’s pass was over the line before it was cleared. The referee was not certain from his position and waived play on. Vale scored their fifth from the spot after McLauchlan chased down a lost cause. He cut inside to shoot only to be felled in the box. Chris Smilllie hit a penalty into the corner. Alf Berry was then replaced by Cameron Hall. A good three points for the club. The team were solid at the back and Carr, Tritton, Coleman and Gillies all had good games as did keeper Collis. Midfield had the best of it in their area. Smillie and Kennedy were outstanding ably assisted by youngsters, McLauchlan and Robinson. The two front players Morrison and McLauchlan had excellent games. The substitutes also did their part. Man of the match went to Steven Coleman for another dominant show at the back. Tomorrow the club entertain Dunkeld in a league game with a 2pm start. Vale of Atholl are sponsored by RW Bell Building Services.
