Shire shine to book a quarter final place

- Matthew Gallagher

Perthshire men’s first team has booked their place in the quarter-final of the Scottish Cup.

Kilgraston School was the venue for Sunday’s tie which sent Inverleith tumbling out of the competition.

Adam Czub netted a hattrick for Perthshire but goals from Mike Robertson and Ross Fleming helped secure the 5-3 victory.

First team manager Dave Berry was thrilled with the win.

He said: “It was one of those games where Inverleith were always in it but the guys really took it to them. It was a really good performance.

“Inverleith has generally been a first division club. It was a big thing for us to beat a club like Inverleith.”

Perthshire are still waiting to hear who they will face in the quarter-finals but Dave said: “In all likelihood we’ll now come up against a first division team.

“It will be a tough task but I know that the players will give it the best shot they can.

“We have a mix of some very experienced players such as Calum Davidson and also guys who are 15 or 16 coming into the first team. It’s a good mix.

“We lost a few players in the close season, with guys going to university and moving to different clubs, and we’ve found it a little more difficult to keep the standard as it was last season but we still have a squad that can compete.” Mike Robertson pushes forward

The league season is approaching its winter break with Perthshire sitting ninth in the National League Division 2.

Dave said: “We have three games left before the break where we then go to indoor hockey. We really need to pick up some points in those games.”
