Appeal for Perth and Kinross families to adopt

Perth and Kinross Council is appealing to people in the region who are thinking about adopting to get in touch as part of Adoption Week Scotland 2018.

The council is supporting the seven day initiative, which this year is taking place between November 17 and 24 and is asking people to come forward at event they will be hosting.

On Thursday, November 22, the council’s adoption team will be holding an open evening at Almondbank House in Perth between 5pm and 7pm.

Staff will be on hand to provide information, answer any questions and help prospective adopters and concurrent carers if they wish to take their interest further.

A spokesperson on behalf of the council said:“In Perth and Kinross, as with elsewhere in Scotland, there continues to be a need for adoptive parents to provide a loving, safe, secure and permanent home for children who cannot be looked after by their birth families.

“We need adopters for children from birth to around seven-years-old.

“These children need lots of love and care to help them overcome some of the earlier difficulties they may have experienced.

“We are also keen to hear from people who are interested in fostering infants with a view potentially to adoption at a later date.

“This is called concurrent care and is usually put in place where more time is needed to determine if the child’s needs can be met by their birth family.”

Perth and Kinross Council’s lifelong learning convener, Councillor Caroline Shiers, added:“Adopting a child is one of the most rewarding things someone can do - it is life changing for everyone involved.

“It doesn’t come without some challenges, but the rewards for everyone are immeasurable.

“If you feel you could give a vulnerable youngster the chance to flourish and grow to adulthood as part of your family, please contact our adoption team by email or phone, or come along to the open evening on November 22 to find out more.

“We provide full training to prepare adoptive parents and ongoing support whenever they need it in the future.”
