Another five of the best from Swifts

Jeanfield maintain unbeaten start to the league

- Matthew Gallagher

Jeanfield Swifts knocked five beyond Inverkeithing Hillfield Swifts on Saturday to keep their unbeaten league start powering on.

In-form Connor McLaren got the ball rolling for the Perth side with a free-kick before Chris Dodd doubled the advantage before the break.

Riverside players started the second half strongly and Richard Donavan soon netted a third to create further breathing space.

Late goals from Robbie Holden - his 98th for the club - and Rhys Davies rounded off another productive showing from Ross Gunnion’s men.

Swifts, who sit third in the Conference C, have now found the back of the net 45 times in eight home games this season.

“I felt we were always in control of the game but were playing well within ourselves in the first half,” manager Gunnion told the PA.

“We were going through the motions and in all honesty it wasn’t exciting to watch.

“At half-time we asked the players to raise the intensity levels and press more and the results were much better.

“All in all scoring five goals and keeping a clean sheet is definitely pleasing. And having five different scorers is also a sign of how strong our squad is.

“Three strikers getting on the scoresheet means selection problems for me, but I welcome those sort of problems.

“We now need to continue to build

Rhys Davies rounded off the scoring late on as Swifts netted five at the Riverside momentum and work harder.

“The winter months can be stop start so taking the opportunities to get three points when they come is absolutely vital.

“Linlithgow beating Broxburn at the weekend has tightened everything up and we are now within a point of topping the league.

“That’s our aim and we are pushing hard to achieve it.”

On the junior football front, Scone Thistle moved up to second in the Premier League North with an impressive home win against Dundee Violet.

Derek Lawson’s men are again piecing together a strong season and their weekend 2-0 victory was sealed courtesy of goals from Darren Gray and Craig Mitchell.

Kinnoull were celebrating a wellearned 1-0 win away at East Craigie with Ben Ragan netting the only goal of the game in the 66th minute.

Luncarty were also in Dundee - for a league tussle with Lochee Harp - where Tony Holt’s first half strike helped to secure a point in a 1-1 draw.

Blairgowrie manager Mark Brash expressed his dismay following Saturday’s 3-2 home defeat at the hands of Forfar Albion.

The Davie Park side showed resilience to level things up shortly after half-time after going 2-0 down in the first period, with Gary Axworthy scoring twice.

But an effort from 30 yards described as a “wonder goal” ultimately meant the visitors from Angus returned with all three points.

Reflecting on the weekend, Blair boss Brash said: “It was a very disappointing result.

“The first half was evenly contested but Forfar took the chances they had and went in 2-0 at half-time.

“The second half was much better and we made it 2-2 after 60 minutes.

“We missed a lot of chances and Forfar Albion scored a 30-yard wonder goal which ended up in the top corner.

“We still had chances after falling behind which we didn’t take, which has been the story of our season so far.

“However, all credit should go to Albion who were a well-organised and a hungry outfit.”

Coupar Angus lost 7-1 away at league leaders Dundee North End. Ryan Knox was the scorer for the Perthshire side.
