Bruce’s shock after racist jibe in golf club

Stand-up met with offensive comments

- Melanie Bonn

Perth Comedian Bruce Fummey Perthshire comedian Bruce Fummey had a nasty experience of racism at a golf club dinner recently.

The outspoken stand-up who regularly represents Perth at the Edinburgh Fringe revealed how as a guest speaker - at a venue he has not disclosed - he met an official at the club who in private repeated a joke that Bruce felt was told blatantly to make him uncomfortable.

Self-titled Blackford Bruce, the Scottish-Ghanaian teacherturned-funnyman shared the incident on Facebook, but refused to be drawn on which club he’d been at on November 19 when he encountered the offensive comments.

“I arrived to speak at a golf club dinner this evening. On being taken into the committee room and introduced to[an official], he said: ‘You won’t need to worry about this place there’s no filming in here.’

“He went on to give me an example of the type of joke a previous speaker could tell without the worry of cameras.”

Bruce repeated the joke, which made derogatory comments about people of colour on a plane in distress, on his Facebook page, leaving many of his fans stunned.

The PA asked Bruce which golf club it had been, but he held back from naming names: “Let the world know that there are white folks who in this day and age still hold Neanderthal views.

“As you see from the response, there are also white folks who oppose those views.

“Should everyone in the white folks club be tarred with the same brush?

“Of course not, I was just letting the good guys in the club know that some of their associates are letting them down.”
