Kyle has crowd in his hand

- Peter Drummond-Hay

It must be gratifying for a performer to hear an audience singing along to songs that they have written and Kyle Falconer, performing at Inchyra Arts Club, must have revelled in that gratification as almost every word he sang was echoed by the capacity crowd.

It is easy to see why. His songs reflect his musical heroes (the likes of the Beatles, Squeeze and Oasis) and like them he is able to conjure a succession of shimmering, glorious and memorable tunes.

Ably supported by solo spots from Stephanie Fraser and then Billy Mitchell, Kyle Falconer took the stage in a very fetching jacket and proceeded to wow the crowd with his shining ability to create terrific pop songs.

From the opener ‘Poor Me’ to his final song ‘Grace’ he and his very able band featured songs from his wonderful new solo album “No Thank You” and selected highlights from his career with The View, and those highlights came thick and fast.

‘Tacky Tattoo’, performed on piano accompanied by some violin flourishes, was fabulous. The band gave sympathetic colour to the parade of irrepressible hits all sung in that unique voice.

These were pop songs in the best sense of the word, catchy and memorable and beautifully played.

The crowd didn’t want him to stop and he gave the impression that he didn’t want to finish either, so back he came for an unscheduled, and wonderfully raucous, version of the Oasis classic ‘Don’t look back in anger’ to round off a perfect evening.

Next to appear at the Inchyra Arts Club are the brilliant Magic Numbers on Tuesday, December 11. Kyle Falconer
