Speakers aim to simplify tax

-

Blairgowrie-based enterprise support organisation GrowBiz has lined up a panel of experts to help rural micro-businesses prepare for imminent changes to the UK Government’s tax administration systems.

From next April, enterprises above the VAT threshold will have to file their tax returns quarterly online, and this is likely to be the case for most small businesses by April 2020.

The latest GrowBiz XChange networking event, which takes place on Thursday this week in Coupar Angus, will look at how business owners can ensure they are prepared to meet HMRC requirements in the next tax year.

The GrowBiz XChange events take place every month at various locations throughout Perthshire and provide an opportunity for local entrepreneurs to get together, network and exchange business cards and hear from inspirational speakers in an informal setting.

The panel for this month’s event is made up of three experts in accountancy who have all worked in or with micro, small and start-up businesses and are keen to share their knowledge and experience with others.

Margaret McLaren of Margaret McLaren Consultancy specialises in helping small businesses with their accounting and tax affairs and has extensive experience in dealing with HMRC both on day to day matters and tax investigations.

Johann Goree is an experienced retail finance manager and owner of award-winning bookkeeping company JGBC who supports micro, small and start-up businesses to become more educated about their finances and to find more effective ways of working.

The third member of the panel is Ros Marshall, director of operations at Molke, an award-winning body positive ethical underwear company based in rural Perthshire.

Ros has years of accountancy experience and is familiar with a number of software packages such as Sage, Xero and PayPal.

As well as presentations by the guest speakers, there will also be a question and answer session at the meeting.

Merle Palmer, GrowBiz operations manager, is looking forward to the event.

She said:“We are delighted to welcome three such well-informed guests to our XChange meeting in Coupar Angus this week.

“As well as being experts in the field, our speakers all have experience of growing their own businesses over the years and supporting others to do the same.

“They know the ins and outs of the tax system and how the various software packages available can tie into it and will have lots of helpful hints and tips for everyone trying to navigate their way through the digitisation of filing your taxes.

“This event really is a must for anyone who wants to know more about how the changes to the new system will affect them.”

The XChange meeting takes place on Thursday, November 29, from 6pm to 8.30pm at the Red House Hotel on Station Road in Coupar Angus. A light buffet and refreshments will be provided.
