This weekend will see Perth’s first ever Romania Day celebrated.

On Saturday, December 1 the Romanian community in Perth and Kinross will gather in the Station Hotel to celebrate both St Andrew’s Day and 100 years of the Romanian Great Union.

St Andrew is the patron saint of both Scotland and Romania, and will run alongside wider St Andrew’s Day celebrations in Perth city centre.

Throughout the day there will be Romanian food and drink served, live music and entertainment, and a chance to learn more about the history and culture of the eastern European country.

Mohammed Afzal, from PKAVS ethnic minority hub, said he is keen to bring all the different communities in Perth together on Romania Day.

He said: “The Romanian community here is very small, but I have a Romanian member of staff who is working within the local community on this.

“The Romanian Consulate General in Edinburgh has agreed to come, and it will celebrate 100 years of the Romanian Great Union and St Andrew’s Day on December 1.

“It will be happening in the Station Hotel and it will be opened by myself and Provost Dennis Melloy, who will say a few words - he has been brilliant in supporting the local ethnic minority communities.

“The Romanian Consulate General will then give a speech on what the day is about and why it is important for Romanians to celebrate the day, followed by the national anthem,

“There will be dance music from a Romanian folk band who are coming up from Edinburgh and traditional food inspired by Romanian restaurant Broth3rs.

“And, to make it even more multi-cultural, the local Polish school will be bringing its children along to sing Polish music.

“We would be delighted to welcome people along to this because we want to bring communities together.”

Romania Day runs from 2pm in the Station Hotel on Saturday, December 1.
