Holden plans to build on century

Robbie far from done after netting 100th goal

- Matthew Gallagher

Jeanfield Swifts striker Robbie Holden celebrated a century of goals for the club - then insisted he’s far from done finding the net.

The in-form forward nudged over the magic number after bagging a hattrick in last weekend’s emphatic league win against Stirling University.

Reaching the milestone was a special moment but already Holden is eyeing more glory in front of goal in the coming weeks.

“It was only really this season that stat man Scott Cummings let me know how close I was to it,” Holden told the Perthshire Advertiser.

“A few years ago I left Kinnoull on 99 goals and that used to niggle away at me, so I was determined to get through it this time.

“I actually thought I’d done it a few weeks back but Scott has been through the record book five or six times and assures me that was it on Saturday.

“Paul Simpson and Connor McLaren have given me tap-ins for two of the goals. All three of them were Holden (centre) is delighted to have banked a century of goals for Jeanfield

from about five or six yards out and they were probably typical of the goals I’ve scored over the years.

“At the start of the season, I would have taken 25 goals. But I’m on 13 just now so would hope that I could get 30, if I stay in the team and injury free.

“I had a bit of a hip injury and was

out of the team for a couple of weeks. When I came in I had chances but my performance had dipped a little.

“On Saturday it all seemed to fall back into place for me.

“We’re playing one up front most of the time so there are three strikers fighting for one spot. And there are other boys who can step into that position.

“You need to keep playing well every week or you’ll be on the bench.”

Holden is hoping Swifts can carry their form from the 9-1 win against Stirling University into this weekend’s Football Nation Qualifying Cup tie away at Lowland League side Civil Service Strollers.

He said: “We felt like we needed to put it right after the draw against Stirling in Perth where we should have been out of sight before we let them into it.

“We were right at it from the start and never took our foot off the gas.

“We’re always encouraged to watch videos of the opposition online so I’ve watched a few of Civil Service Strollers myself. They’ve beaten some of the bigger teams.

“But we can compete and we proved that with the East Kilbride game earlier in the season, who are arguably the top team.

“There is nobody who we should fear when playing Lowland League teams and we’ll be setting out to win.

“We’ll be disappointed if we don’t.”
