New threat to wipe out village landmark

- Robbie Chalmers

A developer has resubmitted controversial plans to demolish a Scone pub and restaurant and build a residential development.

Juniper Residential’s bid to demolish a The Wheel Inn was withdrawn back in October after the company learned it was going to be refused due to concerns over traffic issues.

Claims the air quality in the congested village would improve if the retirement scheme was passed were branded “ludicrous” by the local community council at the time.

However, a new planning application was submitted on November 26 with PKC to validate it.

A letter was posted on Scone and District Community Council’s Facebook page to say it had resubmitted the application.

Cruden Homes were the author of the letter but the name of the applicant is to be confirmed.

The company wants to demolish the existing buildings and build 38 retirement living and 13 affordable apartments, all of which would be restricted to residents aged 55 and over.

The letter says: “The revised application seeks to address and respond to the comments received in relation to the council’s placemaking policies.”

The application has been submitted as a major development, which means pre-application consultation is required.

The letter says: “All aspects of the consultation and engagement process undertaken between

The Wheel Inn may still be demolished May and August, including a public exhibition which was held on July 23, are detailed in the application.”

When the last application was withdrawn the community council said: “We are delighted the Wheel Inn is not to be turned into a retirement [zone], which would have worsened the already heavy traffic issues in Scone.”

The community council said it will meet with developers soon.
