Top mountaineer to speak at Perth group

-

A top mountaineer is to speak in Perth next week.

Thirty years ago, Stephen Venables made history by climbing a new route up the formidable Mount Everest, and became the first to summit the world’s highest peak via the gigantic Kangshung Face.

Stephen also managed this incredible feat without any supplementary oxygen.

And since then he has gone on to climb the icy mountains of the Antarctic Circle and is now sharing these exploits as part of the Perthbased Royal Scottish Geographical Society’s Inspiring People talk series.

During the talk, he will speak about his career highs, including climbing Mount Everest, and making the first ascents of the remote mountains of Tierra del Fuego, the Antarctic Peninsula and South Georgia, as well as some sailing and skiing adventures.

Having just returned from South Georgia, Stephen said:“It’s a magical island in the vastness of the southern ocean.‘‘

Stephen will speak at the Salutation Hotel on Perth’s South Street at 7.30pm on Tuesday, December 11.

Mike Robinson, chief executive of the Royal Scottish Geographic Society, said:“The Royal Scottish Geographic Society has played host to many of the great mountaineers of the past 100 years - Eric Shipton, Edmund Hillary and George Mallory to modern-day greats such as Chris Bonington and Leo Holding.

“It’s a great privilege, therefore, to be once again hosting Stephen in our talks programme and continuing this enviable tradition.

“I hope Stephen’s talk inspires those in attendance to get outside and conquer their own unclimbed summits, however big or small.”

Tickets for Stephen’s talk cost £10, £8 for Tiso Outdoor Experience cardholders and free for students, under 18s and society members and can be bought on the door or on EventBrite until noon on Monday, December 10. Stephen Venables
