Second round win for volleyball team

-

Perth and Kinross volleyball players have been celebrating a second round Scottish Cup win against Dundee University.

This time the Loch Leven Community Campus provided the arena for the victory following a first round triumph over Heriot Watt.

The team is made up of players from various district sides who compete in the Perth and Kinross Sunday league at Bell’s Sports Centre.

But they have taken little time to gel together and that again proved to be the case, winning the first set against the Dundee students 25-17.

The second set followed suit with the Perth and Kinross men securing a 25-18 triumph. But the students hit back to take the third.

With the fourth set up for grabs at 23 points each, the hosts held their nerve to nudge ahead 26-24 and claim the match.

It hoisted the squad into a star-studded draw which took place on Wednesday afternoon at Scottish Volleyball’s headquarters in the capital. Perth players were matched up with current cup holders City of Edinburgh with the tie to be played at home on January 26. Premier League A top of the table clash kicked-off Sunday evening’s Premier League action at Bell’s Sports Centre.

Gregor Walker’s Perth-based Dodgy Spikers took to the court against Colin McGinley’s Team Fife, which turned out to be a battle royal. Spikers took the early initiative by winning the first set 25-21 before claiming the second 25-23.

Team Fife went on to dump Ian McGrath’s Mental Blocks 25-22, 25-20, Les Sikora’s Eagles 25-22, 25-20 and Marco Volpini’s Fifers Too 25-21, 25-21.

Dodgy Spikers, on the other hand, lost out to Mental Blocks 22-25, 20-25 before getting back to winning ways by beating Kinross Scotrange.
