The St Johnstone net was finally breached but Perth players refused to give up an unbeaten run which now sits at seven games.

Goalkeeper Zander Clark couldn’t hide his frustratio­n when Hearts’ Arnaud Djoum looped a header into the far corner of the net early doors.

It was the first goal he had conceded in 552 minutes of football as attentions quickly turned to achieving a positive result at a bitterly cold McDiarmid Park.

Home fans were warmed up when Blair Alston timed his run nicely to bag a leveller, but Oliver Bozanic restored the visitors’ lead as the break approached.

Determined Saints had, once again, attacked with purpose and were awarded a controvers­ial penalty with little over 20 minutes remaining.

Matty Kennedy stepped up to the plate to roll into the bottom corner as Perth supporters hid behind their hands in fear of watching another spot-kick miss.

The final result brought a hint of disappoint­ment for captain Joe Shaughness­y, who admitted defending was simply not good enough for the two goals.

“We didn’t defend the cross for the first goal and then it’s a set-piece for the second,” he said. “Other than that I don’t think they really troubled us that much.
