Safety message at ‘Reclaim the Night’

-

Thursday’s Reclaim the Night march takes over Perth High Street Provost Dennis Melloy (second from right) and chief executive of Perth and Kinross Council Karen Reid (centre) joined the march sexual violence or the threat of it.

“We saw people looking out of windows as we went by and others on the street taking time to read the banners.”

Elaine Cameron took part, holding a banner for ‘Thursdays In Black’: “There was lots of good feeling around the march, folk from different organisations were very supportive of one another.

“There was great singing at the council chambers to get us started and the provost welcomed us warmly, and spoke strongly about the importance of women being safe on Perth streets.

“Four of us carried the ‘Thursdays in Black’ banner. TIB speaks out against violence to ensure that we are all safe from rape and violence in homes, schools, streets, work - in all places.

“Often black has been used with negative racial connotations - in this campaign, it is a colour of resistance. It has been adopted by the World Council of Churches, and is international and inter-faith.”

Jen Stewart concluded: “We could not have done this without the support of Perth Soroptimists, Perthshire Women’s Aid, OWLS, Perth and Kinross Council and the Perth and Kinross Violence Against Women Partnership.”

We had a great turnout at this march, it was really powerful...I hope we’ll do it again
