Councillors call for £1million to put crash barriers on danger road with sheer drops

-

Two councillors are calling for investment into crash barriers at“key danger sites”.

SNP councillors Henry Anderson and Mike Williamson say they are working to secure funding within the party’s council budget amendment to install crash barriers across Perth and Kinross.

The pair say the locations where they want to see crash barriers are roads where the speed limit is not necessarily very high, but where the consequences of leaving the road would be extremely dangerous due to sheer drops or water.

The SNP opposition will be asking for £1 million in this month’s council budget for the crash barriers.

Cllr Henry Anderson, who represents the Almond and Earn ward at Perth and Kinross Council, said:“This is a really important issue for motorists on our country roads.

“Crash barriers offer motorists a safeguard, particularly in winter, which can prevent a nasty accident becoming a fatality which is an improvement we should all welcome.

“This proposed investment of £1m will allow roads officers within the council to prioritise those key sites across the county requiring barriers and get work started making our roads network safer.

“As a professional driver I am all too aware of how dangerous our roads can be which is why I have worked hard to get this measure included in the SNP’s annual budget submission.”

Previously, Cllr Mike Williamson, who represents the Highland ward, had campaigned for crash barriers on the road leading up to the Queen’s View over the River Tummel.

He added:“It’s good news for rural communities to have this planned investment in road safety and I would encourage other parties on the council to follow this lead and make a similar commitment to rural crash barriers installations.”

Councillors will meet later this month to agree the upcoming council budget, which the council leader says will involved finding £28m of savings.
