Online messages spark police alert

-

Police officers in the area have made a plea to young people to keep themselves safe online.

A warning was issued by Police Scotland after a spate of inappropriate messages and photographs appearing on social media in schools.

Police Scotland’s Tayside division now wants to share tips for both parents and young people on keeping themselves safe.

A spokesperson said: “Police Scotland is aware of an increase in the amount of inappropriate messages and photographs being circulated via social media apps throughout schools in the Tayside area from individuals unknown to the recipient recently.

“Here are a few tips for parents and young people in order to keep themselves safe online.

“Don’t accept any friend requests on any app or online gaming from a person you don’t know.

“Don’t engage in any conversation or send photographs with people you don’t know and block them.

“It’s healthy for parents and guardians to have conversations with children and young people about their online life. Trust is important.

“Report any behaviour of this type to a person you trust, whether it be a relation, friend, teacher or a police officer.

“Stay healthy in your online behaviour and challenge what you believe to be inappropriate.

“For further advice regarding social media apps, download an app from the NSPCC called ‘Netaware’, which will provide you with all the information you need.”
