May 17, 2014 is a date which rolls off the tongue of anyone connected to the club. It was the day the Saints went up to lift the Scottish Cup.

Tommy Wright’s men returned to the same venue on Sunday afternoon and were attempting to keep the ball rolling on the possibilit­y of another trophy triumph.

But this time around it turned into a day to forget in the east end of Glasgow as Celtic turned up the heat to knock the Perth men out at the last-16 stage.

Scott Sinclair’s hat-trick was a painful watch for the small pocket of travelling supporters who also witnessed Scott Brown and James Forrest find the net.

It was the third meeting between the teams in less than two weeks and Saints will be pleased to see the back of Celts, that’s for sure.

“When you come to Celtic Park you need to stay in the game and at least get to half-time at 0-0 or better,” said captain Joe Shaughness­y.

“We gave ourselves too much to do and they were poor goals to lose so early. From there Celtic can just keep the ball and don’t need to create anything.

“It’s hard work when you are coming to Celtic and not getting a lot of the ball. You
