Rugby legend talks about his career and life at Pitlochry Festival Theatre tonight

-

As the buzz about the Six Nations Championship builds, what better time to go along to Winter Words at Pitlochry Festival Theatre than tonight, February 15, to hear Scottish rugby legend Doddie Weir talk about his life and career.

Weir (real name George Wilson), started playing rugby for Stewart’s Melville College in Edinburgh, first playing internationally as lock in 1990, and became a mainstay of the Scotland team.

Winning 61 caps and scoring 19 points from four tries, Doddie was a fan-favourite of the Scottish crowd, before retiring in 2004.

Then, in 2017, Doddie announced he had motor neurone disease - involving progressive damage to nerves, and leading to muscle wastage - in a bid to help promote Global MND awareness day, highlighting how there is currently no cure, and most patients diagnosed with this illness die within three years of developing symptoms.

Doddie then set up his foundation, My Name’5 Doddie, and on BBC One’s The One Show, he told how his charity had now raised more than £1 million to help find treatments and a cure.

Doddie was awarded an OBE in the 2019 New Year’s Honours list for services both to rugby and MND research, as well as the community in the Scottish Borders.

In a very special evening beginning at 6pm, Doddie, along with his ghost writer Stewart Weir, will talk over his funny, moving and fascinating exposé of Doddie’s life, sporting career and inspirational fund-raising journey, along with the chance to meet the rugby icon and get his book signed after the event.
