Woman thanks locals after fire ruined home

Faye overcome by how community rallied round

-

Last week as Faye talked, she indicated everything she was dressed in had been donated by strangers: “Everyone’s been really kind. I’ve been really gobsmacked by the way people came forward to give me help.”

Faye says she is a shy person and the fire has forced her to engage with a lot of people.

She said: “I’ve met and talked to more people this week than I have in the last year.

“As well as nice things, some people have been nosey. One guy came in and was asking loudly at the bar about the fire - without knowing I was standing right by.

“And the fire at Taymouth Marina last week brought it all back. I was working at the Kenmore Club last week when all the fire engines came rushing by. It made me shudder, remembering what happened so recently to me.”

Perth and Kinross Council has found Faye a new flat in Aberfeldy, but new carpets are being laid and it won’t be ready for her to move in to for a few weeks.

She said: “Folk have gone and dug out stuff to give to me to kit it out with, I’ve had lots of offers of furniture and bits offered for the kitchen. I’m very grateful.

“But it gets me down, wondering how I’m going to get back on my feet again.

“One nice thing was I walked by the Aberfeldy Opticians and realised I didn’t know my prescription. My glasses were lost in the fire.

“I went in and the girl in there said she’d noticed me walk by without my glasses and she’d gone and ordered me a new pair. She was just waiting for me to come in the shop.”

Donations of money and items like clothing are still being taken at the Thrift Shop in Aberfeldy for Faye (and also for Red, the occupant of the flat below who was also made homeless.)

Julie at the Schiehallion ran a fundraising page for Faye on Facebook which raised £675 while it was open and also continues to act as a drop off point for any gifts of money, furniture or clothing.
