Pair to join Hall of Fame

-

St Johnstone legends Jim Weir and Dave Mackay will be inducted into the club’s Hall of Fame next month.

The former players, both defenders, were nominated by supporters and will formally be inducted at a Perth Concert Hall dinner on Saturday, March 23.

No-nonsense centre-back Weir enjoyed 13 years at McDiarmid Park, which included a special testimonial back in 2004, before moving into management with Montrose.

“I’m absolutely delighted,”Weir said of his induction to the hall of fame.

“I had 13 great years here as a player, team captain and member of the coaching staff.

“The fans were always superb with me and I’d just like to thank them all for their nominations and for voting me to join what I see as an elite group.

“I had my testimonial here in 2004 and the club is always close to my heart.

“I have so many highlights from my time at Saints. The first one was obviously getting promoted back to the top flight as captain under Paul Sturrock and John Blackley.

“I captained the club in Europe away against Vaasa and Monaco which was absolutely fantastic.

“Some of my greatest friends are St Johnstone fans and they know how much the club meant to me. It still holds a big place in my heart.

“I can’t thank the fans enough. The fact I still live in the area, I’m always well received wherever I go.”

Mackay, who captained Saints to a historic Scottish Cup win in 2014, was also honoured to be voted in by supporters.

“To be in that Hall of Fame with a list of people who have contributed so much to the club throughout St Johnstone’s entire history is a really nice feeling,”he said. “The fact that it’s the fans who have chosen me makes it even more special.

“I don’t actually think too much when it comes to the Scottish Cup win unless someone starts talking about it, then it all comes flooding back. It was an amazing time for the club, the fans and for me personally and I’m sure in years to come I’ll look back on it a lot more.”
