Good report for service
A support service in Perth has received a glowing inspection report.
The Care Inspectorate made an unannounced visit to Gleneagles Day Opportunities last year, and gave the service a“very good”marking.
The Gleneagles Road-based service provides support to 26 adults who have a learning disability, including those with challenging behaviour and complex needs.
Some of the activities the service offers includes rebound therapy, interactive storytelling, cooking, nature walks, swimming, sensory experiences, cycling, visits to places of interests, arts and crafts, boccia and music.
The report said its quality of care and support and its quality of management and leadership were both“very good”.
The inspection report said:“Support staff that we observed, and spoke with, went about their work in a very enthusiastic manner and we were clearly very skilled at including people in the different activities provided through both encouragement and positive reinforcement.
“The staff team had access to a very good range of training and development opportunities that, we felt, resulted in high quality and consistent support for people.
“We carried out [an observation] and from this we could see that people received very responsive care and support.
“We saw support provided when it was required, at a relaxed pace, that values the person as an individual and all within a calm atmosphere where staffing levels seemed appropriate.
“It was clear that the service had a strong focus on ensuring that people were able to get their thoughts and wishes across.
“We were pleased to see, for example, people using‘talking mats’, when it was appropriate.
“Overall there was very good support for people to make informed choices, using the communication methods that suited their needs best, including wide use of‘easy read’materials.
“We heard from a number of people that the resource centre was a very safe environment and that this gave them reassurance and comfort.
“In addition, they said that the centre was very welcoming and we could see that it was equipped and maintained to a high standard.
“We could see that people were being encouraged to achieve their full potential, and that the service was continually seeking out new opportunities for service users.
“People were able to take part in a wide range of activities that were aimed at enabling them to get the most out of life.”
Gleneagles Day Opportunities was told to increase service users’participation in review meetings and tailor action plans for individual needs.
The report added:“We also thought that the service could further develop service user involvement in areas such as recruitment and in decisions about how the service is provided both now and in the future.”
No follow-up visits are needed following last year’s inspection.
