RDM pupils are a class above
RDM is proud of their gold award Scone’s Robert Douglas Memorial School commonly known as RDM - has recently been awarded the sportscotland GOLD School Sport Award.
The accolade was presented in recognition of achievements in putting sport and physical activity at the heart of the school and local community.
The school sport award is designed to encourage schools to improve and demonstrate an on-going commitment to increase young people’s opportunities and engagement in physical education, school sport and leadership and provide clear pathways to lifelong participation.
RDM believe that these are important factors in the school curriculum, and give their pupils opportunities to experience a variety of learning experiences.
Their pupil voice has been central in supporting new sporting opportunities on offer within the school and representation in different festivals and competitions.
It puts their young people at the forefront of decision making and implementation of processes around sport and physical activity.
Since achieving the award RDM has been committed to building upon this high standard and this year, so far, they have a wide variety of opportunities on offer within and outwith the curriculum.
Ongoing lunchtime activities and after school clubs include dance, football, fitness, active games, theatre and games club, all for a mixture of age groups.
All of the opportunities are made possible with the commitment from volunteers, pupils and parents.
Karen Todd, who works with Live Active Leisure and is the active school coordinator for RDM, supports all the extracurricular clubs.
This term she is leading on a project to get families out doing more physical exercise together, starting with some local walks for P3 and P4 children and their parents/carers.
Wider achievement groups, to be launched this term, will allow pupils to develop and apply a variety of skills for learning, life and work through activities including baking, knitting, tennis, running, yoga, mindfulness and art with some intergenerational opportunities.
The focus will be on improving the health and wellbeing of all by developing social skills, teamwork, learning from peers and supporting younger pupils to learn by being a positive role model.
The school boasts a fantastic sports committee which includes pupils from P4-7 as well as school staff who have a remit to widen physical activity opportunities and lead on sports-based projects within the school.
The committee are about to launch an inclusion in sport project, receiving specialised training from an external provider, to then deliver activities to children in the specialist provision base. They meet regularly to plan activities which will take place before, during and after school, and help to celebrate pupil success.
