NEWS Accused dead after court no-show

-

A Perth man involved in a court case where he stood accused of embezzling £60,000 from his elderly mother has been found dead.

The discovery was made two days after Iain Macmillan (55), failed to turn up for a scheduled appearance at Perth Sheriff Court.

Iain Macmillan, of Perth’s Meal Vennel, was alleged to have been systematically taking money from his mother while he was supposed to be looking after her.

At the time of the alleged offence, Macmillan had power of attorney over his mother’s affairs, including her finances.

He had been expected to admit the offence during a scheduled appearance at Perth Sheriff Court on Tuesday, February 22, but he was not present on the day and an arrest warrent was issued by Sheriff Lindsay Foulis.

It has now emerged Mr Macmillan’s body was found at an address in Perth onThursday.

His mum Ruby McMillan suffered from dementia and died aged 85 on February 15, a few days before the court date. Her funeral was held yesterday.

We reported last week that Macmillan was accused of taking cash from his mother between July 24, 2009 and March 31, 2014. At the time of the alleged offence, Macmillan had power of attorney over his mum’s affairs due to her loss of capacity.

During the period in question, he is alleged to have taken money belonging to the OAP in Abbey Road and Perth Road in Scone, Auchterarder High Street, and High Street, South Street, South Methven Street, Crieff Road and Edinburgh Road in Perth.

The failure of Mr Macmillan to appear on indictment last Tuesday followed a previous occasion when he had failed to present himself in court. In 2018 he failed to turn up for a court hearing on April 17, but was later traced by police to Carseview Hospital in Dundee where he had voluntarily gone for mental health treatment.
