Now Mr Dixon has written to the government’s Planning and Environmen­tal Appeals Division (DPEA) insisting he will lose customers if the signs are taken down and asking its staff to review the council’s decision.

His statement of appeal says: “Pitlochry Boating Station has had a sign at this location for over 30 years and in this time it has never changed in size or location and never had an issue with Perth and Kinross planning.

“Without this sign we will go out of business as it is the only way passing trade will be aware of us.

“Part of the reason our applicatio­n was refused was due to the positionin­g of the sign. Since then we have had a meeting with senior road engineer Mr Mahoney where we agreed that the sign would be better placed another 500mm from the pavement which we would be happy to do as a condition of planning.

“The other issue was with colour, which obviously is the yellow and blue paddle board sign which we would remove altogether.

“Lastly, it has just come to our attention that the land is owned by Scottish ministers so it seems we need to ask permission from yourselves.”

The DPEA has said: “The appeal has been registered and the planning authority asked for

Planning chiefs have ordered the signs to be taken down their response to the appeal by March 13. Interested members of the public are entitled to make representa­tion and these will be accepted until March 12.”
