Explore our local myths
An immersive exhibition, bringing together the myths, legends and folklore of Perthshire, is to open soon at Perth Museum and Art Gallery.
This spring, Culture Perth and Kinross, the creative organisation behind the museum, will be exploring legends, debunking urban myths and encouraging members of the public to recall the things their granny told them.
All of this will form a major new exhibition called‘Only in whispers, the myths and legends of Perthshire’.
The exhibition will be a first for Perth, as it combines stories, myths and legends with theatrical experience.
Museum curators have collaborated with stage designer Becky Minto to make the gallery look like a Perthshire country house.
And built by Pitlochry Festival Theatre with sound effects by Patrick Dalgety and lighting by Simon Wilkinson, the gallery will take visitors through an unforgettable, interactive experience.
Simon and Becky have previously worked together on various projects and bring a wealth of talent and experience to Perth Museum
the exhibition.
Simon said:“This project has similarities with theatre work in that we are trying to create an atmosphere for the audience and add a little mystery.”
Becky added:“We want people to explore this exhibition and hope they are both inspired and surprised by what they find.”
Visitors to the exhibition will be transported through the mysterious house to uncover stories through objects, clues and suggestions of places and events in the past.
Becky said she found inspiration for her design from museum objects and the collection at the local and family history unit, based at AK Bell Library.
She said:“The museum collections are packed with fascinating paintings, photographs and all kinds of wonderful artefacts and natural history items.
“We hope this exhibition not only tells stories but that it will inspire them.”
‘Only in whispers, the myths and legends of Perthshire’will open on Saturday, March 16 and run until Thursday, June 9.
