Opera performances to be shown on big screen

-

Russian State Ballet and Opera House will take on a number of classics ‘Faust’ on Tuesday, April 30, which again will be live streamed to Perth Playhouse.

Virtuoso leading roles, a large chorus, sensational sets, ballet and an ecstatic finale make ‘Faust’ the epitome of theatrical spectacle - the lavish scale of French grand opera is wonderfully evident in this production by David McVicar.

Set in 1970s Paris, the music includes several of popular opera’s most recognisable numbers, performed by a cast of great international singers and the Royal Opera Chorus. It will be shown at 6.45pm and will last 225 minutes. The renowned opera house will also be performing a number of ballets as well with live cinema screenings.

On Tuesday, May 16, ‘Within the Golden Hour’ will be performed by the Royal Opera House from 7.15pm.

Christopher Wheeldon’s ‘Within the Golden Hour’ is based around seven couples separating and intermingling, to music by Vivaldi and Bosso and lit with rich colours suggested by sunset.

Crystal Pite’s ‘Flight Pattern,’ revived for the first time, uses a large dance ensemble and Gorecki’s familiar music from his ‘Symphony of Sorrowful Songs’ makes for a poignant and passionate reflection on migration.

This ballet will be shown at 7.15pm and lasts 195 minutes.

And finally, the Royal Opera House will perform the ballet ‘Romeo and Juliet’ on Tuesday, June 11.

Shakespeare’s enduring love story is known the world over, and since its 1965 premier with the Royal Ballet, Kenneth MacMilan’s version’ has become a modern ballet classic. The choreography captures the emotions of the young couple as they fall in love, despite the barriers that finally bring about the story’s tragic end. ‘Romeo and Juliet’ starts at 7.15pm and lasts 195 minutes.

Tickets for each of the Royal Opera House’s live performances cost £17.50, concessions £15 from the Perth Playhouse box office on 01738 623126 or www. perthplayhouse.co.uk
