But when the dust settled and the McDiarmid Park floodlight­s were switched off, Perth fans would be lavishing praise on a player who continues to shine brightly.

Jason Kerr could do little to prevent the Dons – Graeme Shinnie in particular – from netting twice from distance and nudging Saints’ winless run to seven games on Saturday afternoon.

What he did do, however, was back up claims that he is fast becoming one of the most highly-rated defenders in Scotland.

The 22-year-old joined the Perth club in the summer of 2015 and served his apprentice­ship in the lower divisions before becoming a mainstay in Tommy Wright’s plans this term.

His latest challenge was to deal with inform Aberdeen forward Sam Cosgrove, a player whose power and precise finishing has made him a menace for defences across the country. He passed with flying colours.
