Spaniard shares tips with players

“I don’t really know too much about the level of futsal in Scotland, but I know there is not so much help.

“I think it’s still not a well-known sport and that’s why there are people trying to push the sport forward. These kind of camps should help.

“I’ve been playing futsal since I was seven and I’m in love with the sport, so passionate about it.

“That is the reason why I’m trying to share my passion with different people around the world.

“I was living in Costa Rica and tried to share my experience in futsal and grow the sport before coming back to Spain.

“With Barcelona I’m a tactical and technical assistant to the main coach. I help the head coach and the team.

“We train four days per week so it’s not possible for me to play anymore.”

Futsal is a five-a-side game played with a reduced bounce ball where focus is placed on technical ability.

Scotland now has a Super League top division as well as a number of regional leagues across the country, including in Perth.

Two different age groups have been catered for throughout this week’s camp and Roger has been impressed with the talent on show.

“The first one is with younger kids from age eight to 12 and they have been really good,” Roger said.

“The second group is the older ones and they are working really well, pushing hard and making a big effort. That is what I want.

“I want it to be intense because then they are going to improve with that. If there isn’t maximum speed or intensity, they won’t improve.

“We have been working on different things. We started with passing, keeping possession and more tactical things.

“Then it was onto one-v-one and two-v-one situations and also transitions. I’m trying to make a complete picture of what futsal is.

“I have tried to put on a good camp this year so that, in the following years, it can grow and we can have more players coming.

“That is my idea. It’s not just coming this year and forgetting about it. We can do it more often and I think that would be good to do.”

Before Roger leaves he will be hosting a futsal seminar at Bell’s Sports Centre on Sunday, July 21 from 9am-5pm.
