Plaque from German twin city unveiled

Provost Dennis Melloy (right) and depute, Councillor Willie Wilson A ceremonial iron plaque has been unveiled in Perth city centre.

The plaque is a gift to the city from its German twin, Aschaffenburg.

It was manufactured in the Bavarian city and is inlaid with the Aschaffenburg city crest, and takes the form of a ceremonial storm drain cover.

Perth and Aschaffenburg have been twinned together for more than 50 years, after mayors from Bavaria travelled to the Fair City to sign a twinning agreement in 1956.

Over the years, there have been many exchanges between the two cities, including football teams, music groups and walking groups.

The plaque was unveiled on Monday by Provost Dennis Melloy and Provost Depute WillieWilson.

It was inlaid into the pavement in front of the council building at 2 High Street, where it can now be viewed.

Provost Melloy said:“The is probably the most unusual civic gift I have ever received.

“We have placed the plaque in a central position on the pavement outside the council offices.

“Residents and visitors to the city of Perth alike can enjoy the craftsmanship which serves as a lasting reminder of the bond between Perth and Aschaffenburg.”

The ceremonial plaque was gifted to the provost earlier this year by the Spessart Highlanders, following a performance they made on Perth High Street.

Perth is also twinned with Cognac in France, Bydgoszcz in Poland, Pskov in western Russia, Perth in Ontario, Canada, and Haikou in China.
