Lyle pitches in at popular St Fillans event
Former Masters and Open champion Sandy Lyle pitched up to thrill members of St Fillans Golf Club.
He spent the day at the Strathearn course as players from across the country participated in the third Sandy Lyle Biennial Cup.
The popular event is held every two years to help raise funds for the Brian Tumour Charity.
Golfers arrived at the course to be greeted by Lyle, who continues to play on the Champions Tour and holds a soft spot for St Fillans.
And he remained an ever-present feature throughout the morning and afternoon, remaining on-site for the evening’s prizegiving.
Enjoying some of the best weather seen for weeks, golfers played a stableford format. Winners were DSE Electrical’s team of Bobby Bain, Andy Lapsley, Jim Simpson and Robin Hulett who scored 143 points.
A club spokesperson said: “At the prizegiving an emotional fundraising appeal was made by a player whose son had died from a brain tumour after a very short illness.
“Sandy Lyle spoke of his support for the charity and referred to the death of his golfing friend Seve Ballesteros who had also died of a brain tumour.
“The presentations were made and Sandy congratulated the club on its organisation of the event and the club’s greenkeeper and caterers were highly commended too.”
The fundraising total will be announced later in August.
Thanks were expressed to many local companies for their auction prize donation and a commitment to meet again in two years’ time was enthusiastically supported. The winning team with Sandy Lyle
