Students’ Pride in city’s solidarity

-

Students from Perth were among the thousands taking part in Perth’s first ever Pride parade at the weekend.

Over 7000 people turned out to take part in Perthshire Pride on Saturday, August 10, with the parade being led by acting legend Sir Ian McKellen.

A group of students from Perth College UHI took part in the parade to stand in solidarity with the region’s LGBT community.

The group, carrying the Highlands and Islands Student Association Perth banner, was led by Amber Little, president of the student association’s Rainbow Foundation.

She said:“Pride is important to students because it gives them a place to be themselves, where no one will judge them for the way they present themselves or the people they love.

“For Perth to have a Pride this year, it shows acceptance, understanding and a willingness to learn more about what LGBT people have to face in their day-to-day lives.

“It also offers friendship and support from people in the same boat.

“We had a small number of counter protesters this year.

“Perthshire Pride is the best place to challenge their views, through education and engagement.”

Among the group of students was Michaela Asisten, vice-president for education and engagement at the students’association.

She said:“Highlands and Islands Student Association Perth represents all students and values inclusion.

“At college, as with wider society, we must continue to strive for a greater acceptance of people’s sexuality and identity.

“Over time, society has changed to become more accepting.

“We are passionate about supporting LGBT students and look forward to continuing to support Perthshire Pride.”
