important historical artefact.

“I will be submitting my own view to the consultation strongly in favour of Perthshire’s claim and would encourage those like-minded to do the same.”

The city’s MSP, John Swinney added: “The Stone of Destiny is widely regarded to have been quarried from Perthshire stone, and was used for the coronation of the kings of Scotland at Scone for many years.

“It is therefore highly appropriate that the stone should return to Perthshire.

“The arguments for returning the stone to Perthshire are not just historical, but also logistical.

“Perth is within 90 minutes travel time for over 70 per cent of Scotland’s population, and is therefore ideally located to capitalise on the desire of both Scots and tourists to visit the stone.”

Although the stone will be based in We revealed this artist’s impression of how the stone would look Perth, Roseanna Cunningham, MSP for Perthshire South and Kinrossshire, wants people from all over Perth and Kinross to get involved in the consultation.

She said: “I fully support the proposal to site the stone in Perth City Hall and would encourage my constituents to respond positively to the consultation.

“We need a strong message that the Stone of Destiny should return to Perth.”

Murdo Fraser, MSP for Mid Scotland and Fife, is also backing the campaign.

He said: “The Stone of Destiny is one of Scotland’s most famous artefacts.

“I believe the stone has one more journey to make – back to its historic home in Perth and Kinross.

“It would also provide an economic boost to the area with an increase in visitors desperate to see the stone.”

And his fellow Mid Scotland and Fife MSP Liz Smith added: “This is great news for Perth and Kinross.

“It would be a major boost to the whole area if the Stone of Destiny were to come home to Perth and I feel local residents and school children would have a great opportunity to engage with a key part of their history if that were to happen.”

The consultation, which is expected to last six weeks, is being hosted by the Commissioners for the Regalia and the Scottish Government – with the Queen herself having the final say on where the stone will go.

It was launched last week, and the PA is calling on as many people as possible to make a submission to give us the best possible chance of getting the stone back.
