Freedom honour for Sir Melville

-

Crowds braved the wet weather on Sunday for the annual City of Perth Salute.

Local performers and international bands joined together to parade from the South Inch to the North Inch on Sunday, August 18.

And then crowds enjoyed an afternoon of performances in the arena on the North Inch.

Some of the bands performing included the Beijing Marching Wind Band, The Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force Steel Orchestra and the New Zealand Army Band, as well as The Black Watch ACF Band, Pipe and District Pipe Band and The Atholl Highlanders.

Sunday’s entertainment also saw Brigadier Sir Melville Jameson KCVO CBE, the former lordlieutenant of Perth and Kinross, receive the Freedom of the City of Perth.

He is only the second living person to be granted this title.

Conferring the honour on Brigadier Jameson, Provost Dennis Melloy said:“The granting of the Freedom of the City of Perth is the highest honour we can bestow to an individual as a mark of special respect or thanks within the city of Perth.

“Every one of the 40 elected members of Perth and Kinross Council voted unanimously to grant the Freedom of the City to Brigadier Sir Melville Jameson, for his outstanding commitment to Perth and Kinross during his time as lord-lieutenant.

“You have tirelessly supported our voluntary, arts and heritage groups throughout Perth and Kinross, with dignity and respect.

“You have also shown a deep respect for our civic heritage and a strong commitment and passion for promoting Perth and Kinross, as well as being a champion for our armed forces, military and cadet organisations.”

In reply, Brigadier Jameson said: “I am deeply grateful for this very great honour bestowed on me today - the Freedom of the City.

“It is a most generous and wonderful gesture - completely unexpected and so very greatly appreciated.

“Perth and Kinross has been very special to me over so mant tears.

“Perth of course is rightly known as the Fair City, and the Gateway to the Highlands.

“It must be one of the great unspoilt cities of the UK with such an impressive array of jewels in its crown - the ancient kirk of St John with its unique carillon of bells, its own cathedral of St Ninian’s, the finest collection of Georgian buildings outside the New Town of Edinburgh, its museums and art galleries, its cutting edge concert hall and newly refurbished theatre, the stunning River Tay and acres and acres of grass.

“It has its own wonderful palace, Scone Palace, which has played such an important part in the history of Perth and Scotland also recently, and also many of our royal visits.”
