CCTV is being used at fly-tipping hotspot

-

CCTV is being used in a Perth car park to clamp down on fly-tipping.

Scott Street car park has been identified by Perth and Kinross Council’s waste services team as a hot spot for fly-tipping, with incidents being reported almost every single day.

The waste services team now has permission from Police Scotland to use the car park’s CCTV to try and catch the offenders.

One of the CCTV cameras is now focused on the car park’s communal bin area each night to monitor fly-tipping.

A spokesperson for Perth and Kinross Council said:“The TotalMobile phone app used by Perth street sweeping crews has identified Scott Street car park as one of Perth and Kinross’ fly-tipping hotspots.

“The car park has been suffering from fly-tipping or mis-represented waste on almost a daily basis.

“The waste services team is spending considerable time, resources and money in removing these items.

“The fly-tipping is also unsightly and potentially causes a health risk to members of the public and council staff.

“After discussions with the council’s community safety team, the waste services team asked Police Scotland to utilise the CCTV camera located in Scott Street car park, in an attempt to gather visual evidence that may help to identify the offenders.”

They continued: “Going forward, the waste service team hopes that the evidence gathered can be used to take action on fly-tippers and that more CCTV cameras can be used in other locations - possibly including a portable CCTV camera which could be funded by several teams across the council.”
