PKC to consider 40mph limit around Auchterarder
Perth and Kinross Council (PKC) is considering introducing 40mph speed limits to B-roads around Auchterarder.
The suggestion was made by Strathallan councillor Dr Crawford Reid who said the national speed limit of 60mph was“dangerous” on these roads.
At this week’s environment and infrastructure committee meeting, PKC’s roads manager Chic Haggart said he was happy to look at the idea further.
But Dr Reid was accused of being “parochial”by convener Conservative councillor Angus Forbes for just suggesting this be applied to roads around Auchterarder.
Meanwhile, his idea was branded“ludicrous” by deputy SNP leader Grant Laing if it were to be rolled out across every B-road in Perth and Kinross.
Cllr Laing scoffed at the idea of expecting someone to drive at 40mph all the way from Luncarty to Blairgowrie.
But Dr Reid said it should just be on a“case by case”basis and made the suggestion as the committee approved a 40mph speed restriction be placed around Blackford in order for it to become a green route and be safer for cyclists and pedestrians.
Dr Reid said:“Is there any good reason why all B-roads are not 40mph?
“It’s dangerous. I would like every single B-road around Auchterarder to be 40mph.”
Mr Haggart said he would anticipate such a measure would involve a lengthy legal and democratic process and be quite expensive.
But the roads manager told the committee he was happy to take the suggestion away and consider it.
The committee approved the decision to expand the green route to include existing road networks near Blackford.
