Kinnoull make it a high five

-

Kinnoull manager Alan Cameron heaped praise on his side’s work-rate after they continued an unbeaten start to league business.

The Perth men put on a disciplined performance against Heriot Watt University in the East of Scotland League’s Conference A to pick up the three points.

Gordon Norrie opened the scoring in the first half before Shaun Simpson’s stunning strike wrapped up the 2-0 win late in the day.

It means Kinnoull have secured maximum points from their opening five league matches.

“Saturday was an extremely tough match against an excellent side who play to their strengths,”Cameron told the Perthshire Advertiser.

“Heriot Watt had long periods of possession but our shape was good and our work-rate off the ball was outstanding and we limited them to very few chances.

“We looked dangerous every time we went forward but the final ball was lacking and it took until the last minute to secure the points.

“Shaun Simpson smashed home a volley into the top corner to add to Gordon Norrie’s opportunist effort in the first half.

“All in all we have to be happy with picking up three points because we can play a lot better. But we managed to grind out a result and that’s what matters.”

In the East of Scotland League Premier Division, Jeanfield’s start to the campaign suffered another setback, defeated 1-0 by Bo’ness United.

Brian Morgan netted for the visitors just shy of the half-time whistle and that proved to be enough for the men from West Lothian.

“It was a very frustrating day to be honest, especially given the performance from last week,”said Swifts manager Ross Gunnion.

“We didn’t play anywhere near to our capability and it came down to a scrappy goal costing us. Too many passes went astray and we fell below our quality standards.

“Bo’ness, to their credit, defended very well and limited our chances on goal but we know ourselves we have much more to show than Saturday.

“Losing Mikey Kennedy to a head knock so early in the game definitely disrupted a bit of our rhythm.

“And missing Paul Simpson, Chris McLeish , Aaron Whitehead and Fraser Smith is definitely going to impact on any team, but the team we had out should have been capable of winning this game.

“All that said, we are talking about Jeanfield playing Bo’ness and being disappointed at not winning the game.

“That’s how far this team have come and the expectations we have for them.

“We have the quality and strength to compete for major honours but need to take that belief into games.”

Swifts now face a Scottish Cup second preliminary round tie against Linlithgow Rose this weekend.

Gunnion added:“The rewards on offer are huge and it offers the players and the club a national platform to showcase ourselves.

“We’ll work hard Tuesday and Thursday to prepare.”
