Wrong-way cyclists ‘need to obey rules’

-

A councillor has slammed cyclists who travel the wrong way up a Perth city lane.

Conservative councillor Harry Coates says he has witnessed countless cyclists on a “regular basis” going at a “furious pace” the wrong way up a one-way lane in Perth city centre.

The Perth City North councillor fears it is only a matter of time before someone gets hurt.

Cllr Coates told the PA he has watched the situation worsen from his Belvoir letting office window over the past year.

He says cyclists whizz over the new road surface outside the concert hall and go past the ‘No Entry’ sign and up Skinnergate, which is one-way, towards Perth High Street.

He said: “My office overlooks it. They come roaring along it. The speed they do is quite outrageous.

“I am not against cycling. I think cycling is a good thing but cyclists have to obey the Highway Code like anyone else.”

Cllr Coates raised the issue at a recent housing and communities committee meeting.

Chief Inspector Ian Scott said: “We do have difficulty in trying to educate some cyclists. What we ask is that everyone is respectful to other road users.

“I get more strong comments on anything relating to cycling than anything else.”

He said the majority of community officers in Perth and Kinross were cycle trained and regularly out on their bikes engaging with the public.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland explained afterwards: “Our community officers regularly use bicycles to get around their areas of responsibility, as they are a practical way of getting around and have the added advantage of being environmentally friendly.

“This enables our officers to increase their visibility, and also makes it easier to come into contact with people who may wish to stop and speak with us about any local issues they are concerned about.”
