SILVER LINING FOR HOCKEY ACE ALISON

- SPORTS REPORTER

Perth hockey player Alison Ramsay has added more treasure to the trophy cabinet.

The former Olympian secured silver with the Scotland Masters 55s team at the European Championships in Krefeld, Germany after a terrific tournament run.

Alison, who was awarded an MBE for her services to hockey, played her part in a hotlycontested final against England.

The Grange Edinburgh Ladies player said she was “delighted ”with a silver medal at European level, which was an upgrade from the bronze medals that the team won last season.

Alison won bronze with the Great Britain squad in Barcelona in 1992 and has more than 250 Scotland and GB caps combined.

She’s never stopped playing, now taking part in Masters competitions every year.

In Krefeld, Scotland won five out of six matches, scoring 19 goals and conceding only three during the tournament.

They lost the final 2-0 to England, who scored twice in the final seven minutes.

The 55s kicked off the tournament with a 7-0 thumping of GlobalDutch before recording a 2-0 win over Ireland.

A 3-0 win over Germany put them in the quarter-finals against an Alliance team. They notched up a 5-0 victory before a tough semi-final test against the Netherlands.

The Dutch scored first but Scotland equalised on the 25-minute mark. They had to wait until the 58th minute for a late strike to take them through to the final against England.

It was then end-to-end stuff until the last seven minutes when England converted a short corner and followed up with a well-worked goal to seal the gold medal.

Alison, who is a partner in local law firm Jameson & Mackay, said:“The tournament was a great experience.

“And, while winning silver was the best result ever achieved by a Scotland Masters women’s team, it was frustrating to just miss out on gold.

“I’ll just have to play for another year to try to win that elusive gold.”

Meanwhile, Kinross Hockey Club’s Gail Nelson missed out on bronze in the 50s section.

A field goal in the 15th minute from Ireland was enough to see them secure the medals.
